The past week two weeks at Night Brunch Summer Lunch has shown us a lot about the community that made us take pause. Our focus was originally all about the kids, but as we started serving meals, we found that the whole community was in need. All ages started lining up every day to get a healthy food option made available to them in their neighborhood. We served the elderly all the way down to young children. As we were providing meals, and looking out at the people in the line, we realized we could not turn down anyone that needed it.
Needless to say, we now feed anyone that comes to us in need. Not only did we open the program to all, we also made some other adjustments. We had to shorten the amount of days we are actively serving out of the Fayette Street Outreach Organization (FSOO) from 5 days a week to 3 days a week. Our schedule is now Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The demand is high – currently feeding over 100 people a day – and we need to take the time to prepare the community center for that level of activity without damaging or doing harm to the facility. There is also a cost to having the doors open every day at FSOO that is now understood since we’ve had two weeks to review.
We are returning back under our new schedule starting Friday July 12th at 9 am.
These adjustments are needed to create sustainability. We want to make sure this program lasts and the people that depend on us will have us there when they need us.
I would also like to commend every volunteer that showed up – ready – to do something great and help out Baltimore City communities. We, The Night Brunch, sincerely thank you. You are all amazing and we look forward to continuing with you all Summer. You make this all possible.
